Student Vacation Placement Scheme
This operates annually between June and September. Students are invited to apply for places. Successful applicants are given the opportunity to spend a week at the firm, shadowing solicitors and other team members in various departments. They get involved in research, amending contracts/leases, file reviews, completing forms, drafting letters, financial calculations, attending meetings, assisting with presentations and, where possible, going to court. Work packs are also provided to give exercises relevant to the different departments, to encourage further research and understanding of both the theoretical and practical side of the law. Previously, placements have been in departments such as Family, Wills, Trusts & Probate, Commercial Property and Corporate.
To give a more rounded placement experience, as well as spending time within the law departments, students also spend time in marketing and human resources. Whilst in marketing, the students gain an understanding of the importance of networking, presentations/seminars and producing articles. Students are given the opportunity to produce articles for publication on the website. Whilst in human resources, students have assistance with interview techniques, application letters and CVs. Mock interviews are conducted with full feedback to assist them in preparation for actual interviews.
Students are given an in-depth look at how a department operates and the various demands placed upon the individual team members. They are encouraged to ask as many questions as they want, in order to facilitate a greater comprehension of each area of specialisation and to give them a realistic view of the profession in general.
